Aligning intent and practice: Unlocking Kenya’s competency-based education potential through critical thinking

Abstract

Competency-Based Education (CBE) is Kenya's current educational model that focuses on a student's measurable mastery of specific knowledge, skills, and behaviors, rather than the amount of time spent in a classroom. It moves educational objectives from the previous content-laden 8-4-4 system that was imbued with content, memorization, rote learning, and classroom competition, to an educational system that promotes a flexible, learner-centered approach designed around real-world applications. This paper argues that shifting to inquiry-based pedagogy and project-based assessment is essential for implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). The analysis posits that all core CBC competencies, including communication and collaboration, are tenable only through the systematic infusion of critical thinking within subject domains. By embedding critical inquiry into daily instructional designs, educators directly bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application. This alignment fulfills the University Competency-Based Education Framework (UCBEF) vision of creating graduates who value practical exposure and industry attachment. Furthermore, it supports progression across the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF) Level Descriptors, ensuring that clear evidence of advanced cognitive skills replaces mere seat time.
